Opis
The Rio Chillar is a river in the east of the Province of Málaga, Spain. It originates in the Sierra de Almijara and enters Mediterranean Sea just west of the town of Nerja.
A great family day out for anyone looking to get away from the beach is to walk up the Rio Chillar in Nerja. It is one of the few walks in the area, that is possible during the height of the Andalusian summer.
The route cuts through the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park, offering plenty of shade, crystal clear river pools and guarantees a brilliant day out for the whole family.
The Rio Chillar walk is considered by many Spanish families as ’a summer classic.’ It can and does, get busy on weekends and local holidays. If doing the hike on a weekend, it is always best to leave early.
This route takes you along the Rio Chillar´s river bed, so be prepared for water wading at certain points.
Access is from Calle Picasso, a street above the municipal sports centre, leading to a pathway which descends to the river. Alternatively, you can start at the river mouth on El Playazo Beach.
Following the track which winds through the fields beside the river, we pass the confluence with the Rio Higueron. On the hill, Cerro Cruz del Pinto, which separates the two waterways, there is a dry quarry. Behind the quarry the river bed narrows, the crops disappear and the track continues to Salto Grande, a small hydro electrical station. If not already on foot, park up and take the path which alternates between both river banks and disappears before Los Cahorros. The vegetation becomes more profuse at this point. Walk along the river bed to El Vado de los Patos (The Duck´s Ford) where you may take a dip. From here on progress becomes more difficult.
